Foxy and Twilight update!

Foxy and her two precious kittens

Just a few weeks ago we sat out under the stars trying to capture and bring into safety two sister kitties Foxy and Twilight who were living outdoors and in harms way.  Foxy had given birth that evening outdoors to two kittens and a fox in the hedgerow was too interested in the situation and so we stayed out watching over momma Foxy and her newborns and sister Twilight who was very pregnant with kittens herself. From 7 PM until 6 AM we observed what goes on at night if you’re a stray. Just as we thought, it’s not any fun. It’s all about finding food, watching out for predators and trying to stay dry because even in the summertime, the dew is thick and cold up here in Maine.

The next day, after all were rescued, they settled into foster care at foster volunteer, Helen’s home. Foxy and her two kittens and sister kitty Twilight now enjoyed the comforts of blankets, regular meals and lots of love. These two sister cats are extremely bonded to one another and Helen learned soon enough just how bonded when she noticed that Twilight was taking Foxy’s kittens away from their mom  Foxy, and treating them as her own. It’s a nice gesture, however, Twilight didn’t have any milk to offer them so they had to go back to Foxy. It was obvious that Twilight needed her own kids to pamper!

Twilight comforts sister Foxy during nursing

Mother Nature provided Twilight a week or so later, with 3 darling new babies of her very own to nurse and love. Now she didn’t have to borrow her sisters kittens…

Twilight gave birth to three kittens of her own!

Sadly, the little gray kitten died but Twilight’s remaining two kittens are doing great.

To observe the bonding between mother kitties and their kittens is so wonderful. They are so “in love” with their kittens, and they hold them in their arms, lick them, protect them, feed them, keep them clean, warm and safe. They are truly Supermoms!

Twilight holds her wee kitten close

They all have months to enjoy the special closeness of mom and kitten. These kittens will learn so much from their moms (and auntie! LOL). When it is time for adoptions, Foxy and Twilight must be placed in a home together. These two are so closely bonded it would be cruel to separate them. We work hard at Safe Haven to honor bonded pairs, we always prefer kittens to be adopted in pairs, mom kitties with a kitten, and bonded adults to be adopted together. Please spread the word about these two exceptional mother cats and help us find a home for Foxy and Twilight together so when adoption time comes their home is waiting!
