Our Shelter Team
Safe Haven’s strength springs from our volunteers. At our adoption center, they do everything from cat rescue to cat box scooping, from laundering bedding to driving cats to vet appointments.
Our volunteers vary in age from school children to 97 years young! Each brings their unique insights and life experiences. Many have worked or volunteered at other animal shelters, or worked as vet techs. Others have been small-business owners, teachers and researchers.
All have one thing in common. They all love and respect animals and are dedicated to helping them.
It takes a dedicated team to ensure that each kitty gets their medicine on time, keeps their vet appointments, receives all the socializing they need, and is as happy and entertained as possible.
We don’t keep our residents in cramped, stainless steel cages. Instead, each animal dwells in a sunny cat room where they can roam freely. Each kitty’s personality is measured and matched to other kitties, then they are assigned to a certain cat room where they will best acclimate.
A healthy cat is a happy and stress-free cat, and so we give them the space, fun and sunshine they crave. Every cat room has bird feeders outside the windows, and all our cats have become avid birdwatchers. This year we even had a few Canada Geese on our property, so our kitties were especially delighted.
Visitors are often amazed that our volunteers know each kitty by name, their history, even which food and medications each one gets. That’s because we treasure each kitty. We treat them as if they were our own cherished pets — until they find their forever home — so of course we know all about them!
Some have lived with us for many years. They’re usually the very shy ones, who are not adopted as quickly as the more outgoing kitties. But even our long-term residents are cherished and spoiled. Our cat socializers continue working with them, to make them more comfortable around people.
We hope you’ll come and visit us. Settle down in a comfortable chair or on the floor and just hang out with the kitties. Our volunteers will welcome you and tell you all about them. Perhaps you’ll consider becoming part of the Safe Haven volunteer team!
Our Thrift Shop Team
The Safe Haven Thrift Shop is loved by locals and vacationers alike, anyone who loves a treasure hunt. They rave about our great selection and low prices, but what they love most is that every penny they spend supports our shelter, located just a few steps down Rt. 1.
Our shop’s volunteers are hard-working and unpaid. Thankfully, they have a good sense of humor, which helps make the daunting task of sorting and pricing hundreds of new items weekly a joy. The No-Kill cause — saving lives! — is so rewarding.
Although we volunteers think we run the shop, actually our four beloved shop cats are the heart and soul of the place. Kanga, Chilly Willy, Hootie and Itty Bitty Boo Boo put on a great show for our customers, seven days a week year-round.
