Foxy and Twilight’s story

Even wonder what your financial support of Safe Haven allows us to accomplish? Here’s a recent example.

We received a call about a “4-month-old black kitten” in need of rescue. Its sibling, a silver kitten, had supposedly been killed by a predator the night before. During our drive, another call came in. The “silver kitten” was not dead after all, but very much alive – and giving birth under the deck!

This created a collapsing house of card effect on our plans. Donna, who was on site, reported the mother was frantically running through the grass as she gave birth to her second kitten. This mother kitty, who was actually about 7 months old, was in a panic, and needed help quickly.

When Joyce arrived, Donna was kneeling on the grass cradling two newborn kittens and their fearful nursing mother. The sister kitty was rolling around and nudging them all. This dearly bonded duo were inseparable and supportive of one another.

Our plan was to get the momma safely back to the adoption center with her kittens and her sister. This plan dissolved when the mother cat, now named Foxy, bolted. She would have nothing to do with the carrier and scampered away. We made several trips back and forth for supplies and equipment, while Donna stayed to monitor the babies.

We weren’t certain if Foxy would give birth to more kittens, so we watched her with flashlights. We soon spotted a hungry fox lurking nearby, and agreed we would stay all night, if necessary, to protect her.

The two kittens cried for their momma, wanting both food and warmth. We comforted them on a heating pad. We soon captured the sister kitty and named her Twilight. We hoped she would be a lure to catch the mother cat.

The stars came out, the dew was heavy, and the air was cold. Growing concerned about the kittens, at 12:30am we decided to bring them to volunteer Helen, who syringe-fed them all night, while we returned to try again to trap their mother.

We sat with blankets and flashlights observing the fox, and decided to name this momma kitty Foxy. Around 3am a couple more strays came around, hungry for food. The plight of homelessness for kitties is never-ending. There is so much work to do, so much mercy to give. We monitored Foxy thru the night until 6am. Dale, who has trapped many cats, came down to take over. Just before noon, we got a call that she was caught.

Together again

All are now back together. All have been examined by our vet, and are all healthy but thin. Momma Foxy has her two darling kittens. Her sister, Twilight, is due to deliver any day now.

Foster mom Helen says she had to temporarily separate Twilight and her sister, because Twilight kept wanting to take over Foxy’s babies and try to nurse them as her own!
This is a very sweet family, and we’ll keep you all up-to-date on them.

This is just one example of what Safe Haven does. Your continuing support is all we have to allows us continue our No-Kill mission of love. Thank you!
