About Safe Haven

Our Mission

Safe Haven’s mission is to provide sanctuary for abused, abandoned and unwanted feline companion animals of our community, a place where they will experience compassion and healing.

We promote humane treatment, responsible pet care and the prevention of cruelty through example and education.

What We Do

Safe Haven rescues, rehabilitates and finds permanent, loving homes for cats and kittens who have been abandoned, abused, injured or surrendered in York County, Maine. Our no-kill, all-volunteer non-profit organization has been a literal safe haven for thousands of at-risk felines.

Our adoption center at 1420 Post Road (Rt. 1) in the heart of Wells was custom designed to be a cat shelter. Five sunny, spacious, cage-free rooms allow our “guests” to relax and recover from whatever traumas brought them to us. Our open environment gives the cats the freedom to run, play, and form bonds with one another. All receive lots of love and attention from our volunteers and visitors as well as expert veterinary care.

Every cat receives complete veterinary tests, vaccinations and treatment upon arrival, including FIV and feline leukemia testing and spay/neutering if needed. Many also require treatment for illness or injuries. All this is in addition to the basics – food, litter, laser toys, catnip mice, Temptations treats, comfy pillows and bedding.

Safe Haven receives no public funding of any kind. We are supported entirely by the generosity of individual animal lovers, near and far, local Maine businesses, and the proceeds of our busy Vintage/Thrift/ Antique Shop,  Cattail Farm, 1784 Post Road, Wells. Open 11-4pm daily
