This week’s dynamic duo: Meet Mama and Butterscotch

Mama and Butterscotch are heartbreakers. Surrendering them to Safe Haven broke their owner’s heart. She had to move out of state to be a caregiver to an elderly father, and his residence does not permit pets.

Being surrendered was sad and scary, and Mama and Butterscotch went through a period of depression. Now they’re back together in one of our sunny, spacious adoption rooms. There are plenty of other beds to sleep in, but Butterscotch still prefers to drape himself over Mama, especially when she’s getting attention.

Maybe he’s afraid she’ll be taken away from him again, but we’re going to make sure this doesn’t happen. They must be adopted together.

Mama, age 7, and Butterscotch age 6, are quite a pair of gingers. Mama is dwarfed by her big baby’s ginormous size. His long fluffy coat makes him look even larger. She is rather petite and short haired.

It’s comical to watch Butterscotch squeeze his oversize body next to his Mama. To fit more easily, he drapes his big fluffy arm over her side and rests his head on her body.

To say that Butterscotch is a little needy is putting it mildly. He wants to be mom’s shadow. How does mom feel about it? She’ll give her boy a hiss if he gets totally obnoxious and then all is well.

These two cats are wonderful and sweet and so ready for a forever home. Both beautiful ginger cats are sweet, silly, great with people, and would probably be very good with respectful older children.

Mama and Butterscotch are very desirable and we recommend you don’t wait to adopt them. Adoption applications are the first step, after you schedule a time to visit and meet them.

Lots of other equally desirable companions are also available for adoption. Meet a few of them right here. Or see them all at petfinder.com.

Our Vintage and Thrift shop at 1784 Post Road, Wells, is where you can shop and support our great cause. The sales in our shop help pay our vet bills and operating expenses like mortgage and utilities.

We think you’ll enjoy scouring two sprawling floors of our antique apple barn for rare treasures and thrifty bargains. Some people stay for hours searching for the perfect gift (for themselves and others).

Enjoy our huge book department while they’re 50% off.

Currently our linen dept is offering a 50% off sale through March 31. Come and take advantage of the huge discount on bedding, towels, tablecloths, shower curtains, and more.

Donate your unwanted treasures every Saturday from 12-3pm. Small furnishings, antiques, jewelry, linens, clothing, kitchenware, home décor, craft supplies, and anything vintage is welcome! Thanks everyone!

Did you meet these three?

Finley, Chloe and Bolt

Scaredy Cat School (SCS) is preparing for a triple graduation. Our 3 long-term students are each passing their final exams! Our school for fearful cats has a long history of redirecting aggression and fear into confidence and trust.

Some SCS kitties need only a month or so. Others are so haunted by their traumatic past, they need a year or more to learn to trust.

This class is a unique one. Finley could have graduated long ago, as she is the sweetest, cutest and silliest 15-month-old tuxedo. But her mother Chloe had a tough past and needed to overcome her fears.

This beautiful 2½ year old dilute calico sports fawn, tan, and cream colors, so she catches everyone’s eye. Uncertain Chloe scares easily. She gets spooked by sudden movements, but she’s more confident around her teachers. She trusts them.

We hand-feed her Temptations and stroke her with a back scratcher, and marvel at how far she has come. She’s ready to graduate.

Bolt is a 4-year-old handsome tuxedo. He’s been the most cautious and stubborn student in our long SCS history. He arrived more than a year ago and brought with him 3 years of fearful living to overcome. Bolt has tried our souls at times, but has truly won our hearts.

Our 20 devoted volunteer teachers have needed bandages from Bolt swiping their fingers when treats and toys were presented to him. He let us know he didn’t trust us and our presence made him angry. He ruled us and pushed us away from him.

What Bolt didn’t know was that we believed in him, so we persisted, but in a more careful, gentle way. Now the tide has finally turned. Bolt now allows us to use the backscratcher on him and seems to enjoy it. Some of us have even stroked him with our bare hands and we feel extremely privileged.

Since these 3 students have been together for more than a year, they have become a family. The familiarity and strength they share with each other have convinced our team to keep them together for adoption.

Bolt is the biggest reason; he needs the other two the most. All 3 cats must be adopted together.

We’re looking for a special home with cat-savvy people who understand shy cats. We know Chloe and Bolt will need ongoing training and reassurance to develop into the loving family members they can become.

These three have learned all they can in our schoolroom. They’re hungry for a real home. A home where the same faces and voices comfort them. We have seen it hundreds of times. A real home makes all the difference with shy cats.

These 3 Scaredy Cat School students are now available for adoption to qualified cat-smart, cat-loving people who will continue the loving work we have dedicated to them. We love them so much and want them to have the best life together, so we’re looking for the best to adopt them.

If you are interested in adopting Finley, Chloe and Bolt, please call Joyce at 207-229-8314. Get a head start by filling out an adoption application. Thank you.

Right now, we really need cashiers. We also need volunteers to work in our clothing department with our department manager. You’ll tag, hang and display the wonderful donated clothing, then watch it fly off our racks and go home with the most wonderful people.

Please give Joyce a call at 207-229-8314 or fill out a volunteer application here. Thanks!

Please remember that we collect your redeemable bottles and cans at both our locations. Our shelter at 1420 Post Road has a roomy bottle shed.

At our shop at 1784 Post Road you can ask for a Clynk bag at checkout, take the bag home and fill it. Then bring it back to us or drop it off at your local Hannaford. Yes, the bag will already have our Clynk tag on it.

The funds from your bottles and cans really matter! Yes, it’s only a nickel, but each nickel helps us afford the routine consumable items we need regularly.

Like cat food and litter, paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates, dish detergent, laundry detergent, trash bags and other essential items we often run out of.

Please check the wish list for more items we frequently need. You can drop off these items at either location, and we are very thankful when you do.

If you see a stray dog or cat, please call a No Kill shelter or your local police department. Thank you.

We have more than 100 kitties in our care now. Check them out on our Petfinder page.

Announcements

Safe Haven welcomes volunteers who love cats, have love to share and time to spare. Please apply to volunteer here. You will be amazed at how good it feels to get involved in our No Kill mission.

As our shop continues to thrive, we’re currently seeking several more volunteers to help determine the appropriate price of donations. Volunteers will be taught how to research and price items and mark them to be ready for display in our shop. You’ll work with another volunteer, for 3 hours once a week. Please text 207-229-8314 FMI.

Speaking of shopping, you could buy us something from our Amazon Wish List. Thanks so much for all your support!

Donations of cat food, litter and cleaning supplies are always needed and very welcome. Bring them in during business hours any day of the week.

Are you seeing outdoor cats in your yard? Please don’t turn your back on them. Maine weather shows no mercy to animals living outside. If you know someone who is overwhelmed with cats or may be neglecting their pets, please don’t ignore that. You are that animal’s life link. Every life matters.
