How About a Nice Budweiser?
At Safe Haven, we often see kitties left homeless and unwanted when their owner passes away or moves into assisted living. We urge everyone to make a plan for your animal companions in case of a life change, especially an emergency.
Five-year-old Budweiser is a perfect example. This young and healthy kitty had a long life ahead of him, yet now he’s homeless after his aging owner moved into special care housing.
Budweiser has found a warm landing spot at our shelter. He has several volunteers as his new girlfriends. And no wonder! He’s engaging and endearing and so handsome! This sweet boy is known to curl up in laps and do all the right things that make him a very popular fellow.
Budweiser is very friendly, and knows his name when you call him over. He has adjusted very well to his temporary stay at our shelter. That shows us he’s a confident, happy kitty that’s easy going. He’ll be a wonderful addition to your place.
He’s ready to be your best friend and forever companion. Please get to know him, then fill out your adoption application by going to www.safehavenhumanesociety.org, or call the Safe Haven shelter at 1420 Post Road in Wells. The number is 207-646-1611.
Hey Crafters!
Do you have handcrafted cat-related items to sell? Safe Haven welcomes them at our table at the Kittery Blueberry Festival & Craft Fair at the 1st Congregational Church of Kittery on August 8. If you make cat greeting cards, paint rocks, make cat jewelry, sew cat items, etc., we would love to have your donated works of art to sell at our table. We can give you a donation form for your tax-deductible donation.
We’re collecting items now. Drop them off at our Wells shop at Cattail Farm, 1784 Post Road any time during business hours. We’re open 7 days a week from 11-4pm. FMI 207-229-8314. Thank you for your consideration.
Every Saturday, 12-3 we accept donations for our wonderful thrift and vintage shop. We welcome summer clothing, outdoor garden furniture, jewelry, kitchenware, home décor, linens, small furnishings, pottery, art, antiques, and anything vintage. We love unique items and collections of many categories. If you have questions about donations, please text 229-8314.
During the hot summer months, please remember the wildlife and strays in our own backyards. They’re desperate for clean water. Put out a bowl of fresh water for them. Please put a clean stick in it, to provide a rescue ladder for a poor thirsty mouse or chipmunk that might otherwise drown. It’s a kind gesture to offer our Mother Nature.
Meet Chandler
Safe Haven works very hard to continue protecting cats even after they have been adopted from us. All adopters sign a contract that requires their kitty to always be kept indoors for life.
But modern life brings more and more development, meaning less and less habitat for wildlife. Predator attacks are increasing. Summer also brings more traffic. All are big threats to outdoor cats.
So you can imagine how concerned we are that a recently adopted kitty named Chandler had escaped his home through an upstairs window screen which was thought to be secure.
This kind of screen has a peg at the bottom that keeps the screen closed. But when you push on the screen, the hook and peg do not always stay in place. The screen’s thin frame can also bend with weight on it.
That’s probably what happened with Chandler. He leaned on it, it gave way and he jumped outside. It was only his 4th day in his new home.
Much heartbreak ensued. Our trapping team has been monitoring the vicinity but haven’t spotted Chandler. A neighbor saw him once, the night after he disappeared.
Please keep your eyes peeled for this beautiful long-haired orange kitty in the Faxon Drive/Hobbs Farm Road area in Wells.
Chandler was rescued in late May from a rural property in Lebanon and brought to Safe Haven. He had lived in a kitty colony and would have gone into Scaredy Cat School for socializing, but he was already very sociable.
So after his initial medical exam and treatment were completed, he was quickly adopted. And then he escaped.
Please help us spread the word about Chandler. You can help us find him. He hasn’t been seen for about a week, and we’re getting desperate.
If you’re traveling in the Faxon Drive/Hobbs Farm Road area in Wells and see a handsome orange cat outdoors, please do not approach or chase him! Just try to get a photo to ensure it’s really him.
Please note the exact location. Do not approach him. Just watch. Does he seem to be on the go, or is he settled?
Please call Safe Haven at 954-803-0303 immediately, no matter what time. Your sighting could save this sweet cat’s life. Thank you!
Reminder: our Wells thrift/vintage shop at 1784 Post Road is open from 11-4 daily. Bring donations Saturdays from 12-3pm. Please wait to donate winter clothing, Christmas items, etc.
We welcome clean, in-season clothing in bags that are not too big or heavy to carry up 3 flights of stairs in our old apple barn.
We’d love your unwanted housewares including kitchenware, home décor, useful items in great condition, art, pottery, clocks, antiques and anything vintage. Jewelry and watches of all types are appreciated. Small furnishings are welcome but please no chairs.
PS: Please — if you have a cat, double-check your window screens!
Need a workout? We can help!
Saturdays from 12-3pm our shop receives donations. Half of them must be carried up to our 3rd floor to be prepped, sorted and priced. Now we are without our college student team that helped us every Saturday. Now they’ve graduated and gone back home.
We urgently need several strong people willing to help for 2-3 hours on Saturday afternoons to carry donations up to our 3rd floor. It’s a good workout and healthy, athletic people tell us it’s a great way to train.
If you or someone you know can help us, please call 207-229-8314. We also welcome community service and families with adult children who want to help us.
Volunteer applications are right here.
Our trapping and rescue program also needs more volunteers. Our biggest and most urgent need is helping poorly socialized and feral females who are pregnant or nursing kittens.
We need experienced cat lovers who understand the urgency of getting mama cats into a safe environment, with good nutrition and medical care so they can raise healthy babies.
Safe Haven is currently planning on trapping ferals at 2 rural locations. That will require more community support: volunteers, kitten food, gas cards and foster homes. To learn more about our trapping and rescue program, please call Kathy at 207-251-1789.
Thank you for your interest. We really look forward to working with you!
Love our shop? Would you like to get a 20% discount on purchases? Become a volunteer!
Right now, we need cashiers and volunteers to work in our clothing department with our department manager. You’ll tag, hang and display the wonderful donated clothing, then watch it fly off our racks and go home with the most wonderful people. Please give Joyce a call at 207-229-8314 or fill out a volunteer application here. Thanks!
We’d love your cans and bottles
Please remember that we collect your redeemable bottles and cans at both our locations. Our shelter at 1420 Post Road has a roomy bottle shed right in the parking lot.
At our shop at 1784 Post Road you can ask for a Clynk bag at checkout, take the bag home and fill it. Then bring it back to us or drop it off at your local Hannaford. Yes, the bag will already have our Clynk tag on it. Just scan it and drop it in the chute.
The funds from your bottles and cans really matter! Yes, it’s only a nickel, but each nickel helps us afford the routine consumable items we need regularly.
Like cat food and litter, paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates, dish detergent, laundry detergent, trash bags and other essential items we often run out of.
Please check the wish list for more items we frequently need. You can drop off these items at either location, and we are very thankful when you do.
If you see a stray dog or cat, please call a No Kill shelter or your local police department. Thank you.
We have more than 100 kitties in our care now. Check them out on our Petfinder page.
Announcements
Safe Haven welcomes volunteers who love cats, have love to share and time to spare. Please apply to volunteer here. You will be amazed at how good it feels to get involved in our No Kill mission.
As our shop continues to thrive, we’re currently seeking several more volunteers to help determine the appropriate price of donations. Volunteers will be taught how to research and price items and mark them to be ready for display in our shop. You’ll work with another volunteer, for 3 hours once a week. Please text 207-229-8314 FMI.
Speaking of shopping, you could buy us something from our Amazon Wish List. Thanks so much for all your support!
Donations of cat food, litter and cleaning supplies are always needed and very welcome. Bring them in during business hours any day of the week.
