Welcome to Safe Haven

A Recent Feature for Weekly Sentinel

While Montana was hunting in the cold October moonlight, the stars and planets must have aligned perfectly, raining good vibes down on this fortunate stray.

It was his good fortune that animal-loving people were concerned about him having to fend for himself.

They got the ball rolling in the right direction. Miska’s Ark trapped him on Dec. 1 while John Denver’s song Montana Skies” was playing. The lyrics, “Oh Montana Give this child a home, Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own” seemed to be very relevant to the situation.

So this stray was named Montana.

His luck continued as he was put through the AWS TNR program and even landed a free sleepover, courtesy of the staff at Lucky Pet Animal Hospital as his future was being decided. Where to next?

Those who assessed him felt Montana wasn’t barn cat material, but where could he go? No one had claimed him as their own. All local facilities were full and juggling a wait list.

Then Safe Haven heard about Montana. We quickly made room for this dear boy. He settled in well, with our volunteers gushing all over him.

During his very blessed journey, Montana won everyone’s heart. This 2 or 3-year-old beauty, a healthy tuxedo, shows great potential to be a real snuggle bunny. He has one missing tooth that gives him a cute grin, a rosy pink nose, a soft meow and a sweet nature.

Despite his scary history, he is a gentle fellow and shows no aggression.

Still a bit overwhelmed by all the big changes in his life, Montana seeks solitude in his cubby. But scratch his forehead and he sticks his gorgeous head out for more affection. It’s just a matter of time before he’s a total lover boy.

We know Montana’s good luck will continue through his life in a loving forever home.

As only John Denver could sing it, let’s find this “child” a home and the love of a good family. Please fill out an application to adopt his lucky fellow!  FMI call 207-646-1611.

End of the year message from Joyce

Our “Top Cat” Joyce just posted her annual year-end message over on Facebook. You should read it. It’s been quite a year for our little grassroots group. Safe Haven saved so many at-risk felines, our vet bills exceeded $250,000 in 2024!

Happy Holidays to all and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated toward our matching gift campaign.

Thanks to very generous supporters and friends who provided the initial $40,000 which would be used to match, dollar for dollar, any donations we received up to their $40,000. We began the fundraiser in November and it wrapped up on Christmas day.

Your response to our fundraising letter was enthusiastically received. Over the next few weeks, donations poured in! Many landed in our PO box, others were delivered by hand to our shelter and shop. Many donated on our website via PayPal and credit cards.

Thanks to so many of you being kind and generous, Safe Haven succeeded and met our goal, days before our deadline.

But additional donations kept coming in, even after we exceeded our goal. We are so grateful!

Thanks to your help, Safe Haven can more comfortably approach 2025 with more stability. We’ll be able to save even more lives in the new year, as your donations are used to pay our vet bills.

The gift you have given to the animals was our Christmas Wish, and we are beyond grateful! Kitty rescues and intakes keep increasing, and the costs of both routine and emergency vet care have dramatically increased.

The challenge of maintaining a budget is a fight worth having. Like you, we believe every animal is worth saving. But your generosity has made it easier for us to continue our no-kill mission. by being so kind and generous. We cannot thank you enough!

Announcements

Safe Haven welcomes volunteers who love cats, have love to share and time to spare. Please apply to volunteer here. You will be amazed at how good it feels to get involved in our No Kill mission!

As our shop continues to grow, we’re currently seeking several more volunteers to determine the price of donations. Volunteers will be taught how to research and price items and mark them to be ready for display in our shop. You’ll work with another volunteer, for 3 hours once a week. Please text 207-229-8314 FMI.

Speaking of shopping, you could buy us something from our Amazon Wish List. Thanks so much for all your support!

Donations of cat food, litter and cleaning supplies are always needed and very welcome. Bring them in during business hours any day of the week.

Are you seeing outdoor cats in your yard? Please don’t turn your back on them. Maine weather shows no mercy to cats and kittens living outside. If you know someone who is overwhelmed with cats or may be neglecting their pets, please don’t ignore that. You are that animal’s life link. Every life matters.
