Over the years we’ve taken in many abused cats that needed special homes, and each time we have found them the best families.

Danica and Obie are two more innocent creatures who were terribly abused, and they need their story told.

Danica’s Story: A man thought it was “good enough” for a cat to live as a mouser in his dark, dirt-floor garage.

So he tossed a sweet 2 year old kitty inside and locked the door. This poor cat lived as a mouser for 10 years until someone discovered her plight, and he was forced to surrender the 12 year old traumatized cat.

The garage was filthy and there was nowhere for Danica to live but up in the bare rafters, year after year. There were no windows. It was cold, dark, lonely and frightening.

The poor animal knew no kindness. She had no companionship, no blankets. Only the mice and her misery. Food was thrown on the filthy dirt floor for her to eat.

After she was rescued from her solitary confinement, Safe Haven received her and she was given 10 years of overdue medical care.

This sad tiger kitty remains traumatized and haunted by her past.

Danica is now 15. She finds solace in our sunny farmhouse, and adores the bright, warm light that streams through our porch windows. Danica’s health is good except for arthritis. She receives a monthly pain injection to keep her comfortable.

Danica remains fearful and cautious, still reacting to the horrible 10 years she was trapped inside the garage. She lost 10 years of her life there, and was cheated out of everything good.

Her primary comfort now is our sunporch and the companionship she gets from her best friends, Obie and LaVerne. Our volunteers try to coax Danica out of her fear and depression. Just recently she has been hiding less and responding to yummy treats. But she has a long journey ahead. We want her to enjoy some happiness in her lifetime.

Obie’s story: Obie arrived at Safe Haven as an injured feral with facial cuts and scars, a disease ravaged ear, fractured teeth, a dirty, tick-infested coat, and a bullet lodged somewhere inside him.

In all my years of rescue work, I’ve never seen a cat with a sadder, more hopeless face and battle-worn body as poor Obie.

We’ve had this wonderful survivor for a couple years now, and he and Danica have developed a special bond. Despite his young age of 5, Obie has arthritis from being shot, and he also receives a monthly pain injection from our vet. Obie is beautiful with long, blond and white hair.

He is more confident now but still shy. He plays and loves catnip and enjoys the company of our caregivers. With love, he will be happy and confident.

Danica and Obie share the sunny living room of our farmhouse with LaVerne, a 2 year old torti that arrived last year — and a day later gave birth to 4 kittens! Her kittens have all been adopted and now she has formed a loving friendship with Danica and Obie.

The three of them are bonded and we wish to keep together. We understand finding someone willing to adopt 3 cats, when 2 were abused and are still fearful, is a challenge.

But we hope that telling their stories will reach the right person. Safe Haven would continue to pay for Danica and Obie’s monthly pain injection, preferably from our vet. These poor cats deserve happiness and lots of love. Help us find it!

Please call 207-646-1611 for more info. Adoption applications are right here.

From the litterbox… Safe Haven is switching litter from clumping clay litter to wood pellets that are used for small mammals including cats. This kind of bedding is safer as it’s dust free and is more environmentally kind. Another good thing, it’s cheaper!

To help us with our switch over, please consider donating gift cards from Tractor Supply

Announcements

Safe Haven welcomes volunteers who love cats, have love to share and time to spare. Please apply to volunteer here. You will be amazed at how good it feels to get involved in our No Kill mission!

As our shop continues to grow, we’re currently seeking several more volunteers to determine the price of donations. Volunteers will be taught how to research and price items and mark them to be ready for display in our shop. You’ll work with another volunteer, for 3 hours once a week. Please text 207-229-8314 FMI.

Speaking of shopping, you could buy us something from our Amazon Wish List. Thanks so much for all your support!

Donations of cat food, litter and cleaning supplies are always needed and very welcome. Bring them in during business hours any day of the week.

Are you seeing outdoor cats in your yard? Please don’t turn your back on them. Maine weather shows no mercy to cats and kittens living outside. If you know someone who is overwhelmed with cats or may be neglecting their pets, please don’t ignore that. You are that animal’s life link. Every life matters.
